? >> "outfront" tonight, mark glaze is the director of the group mayors against illegal guns. steve doolan of the michigan coalition for responsible gun owners. mark, i will start with you. you heard from the nra a real focus not so much on guns, really talking about mental illness. they talked about tracking people who are mentally ill and pretty much everything, not about taking away guns but adding more guns. what did you make of their news conference today? >> you know, as somebody who's watched the organization for a while, my dad was a licensed gun dealer in colorado, i know a lot of nra members, it was a really surprising performance. the nra is usually quite smart. then again, they've never been under pressure like this. the truth is, it struck me as incoherent and bordering on detached from reality. talking about things lapierre gets paid a lot of money to talk about on a regular basis. it was not the time to say things even nra members don't believe. i think it is important as we have this debate that nra members are not the washington leadership. they're two very different thing

:07, here's steve. >> thank you very much. beautiful sunrise over the big city here. we have some areas that are clear, probably some fog otherwise its clouding up especially to the north and some rain is trying. this is not a strong system but every system so far in a rain year -- or a wet year you go with it. in a dry year this doesn't have a chance but there will be light rain parallel to the coast. it's cold. pockets of fog. mostly cloudy. chilly to cold. for some not too bad but for others really cold out there. rain develops and if the system has enough punch snow level could be around 2500 feet. that wouldn't be until later though. 34 seems possible there. livermore and concord. 1 degrees in tahoe, sacramento 32 and even reading at 30 degrees. there's cold air to the north. you can see the lines right there -- some of that air is mostly clear. that's where some of the fog has been forming. looks like i doubt much of that is reaching the ground but it might. some of this lighter rain is starting to fill in with a lot of cloud cover. but watch how it really just kind of hangs -- ki

. these are the two officers, matt cloud and steve gritch, both from the bayview department. at 2 a.m. they were called about a woman bleeding outside the providence shelter on third and mckinnon. when they approached they didn't find the woman but, instead were flagged down by a man cradling a newborn baby. that baby was not responsive. these officers are both fathers and knew that the baby wouldn't make it if they didn't act. the ambulance they called could take 15 minutes to arrive so instead officer cloud drove to the hospital while officer grit ch performed cpr. >> having two young children i know what a baby should look like when it's first born and this baby, there was no movement, no screaming, no crying. >> as we were driving there, i wasn't really worried about it yet, you know, i was kind of focused on it. when we got here, i lost it. >> and the baby is okay. he was treated at san francisco general hospital. as for the mother, she was later found and also treated and will likely be charged with abandonment. these officers are being hailed as heroes and they both cried after it was al

inside the school. 18 died at the school. two were taken to a hospital and died there. steve, a former police detective, a school security expert joins us now. how do you stop something like this? >> we have to review the current system. it's not working. we are putting this in the brains of individuals, to commit these crimes. our educational institution, at this level with children that young are soft targets. every school across america is a soft target. we need to revamp the system. if we have to put a police officer in every school, we need to do that. we need to train our teachers. they are the first line of defense. we need them to step up and answer for the young children. older people, we can tell them. but the children have seen dozen of fatal shootings, none of them real. they are occurring on tv. they haven't got the concept. it's many years before the effects set in on them. >> the shootern't go in a police department, doesn't go to a military base. he goes to where there are absolutely unprotected individuals, unable to fight back. >> cowardly act. educational institution

have made it particularly difficult to wrap our heads around. joining me now is steve perry, host of tv's "save my son" also founding of the capitol preparatory magnet school. steve i'm glad you're here. we talk about schools. we as parents think that they're supposed to be sanctuaries for our kids. how did things get to this point and why? >> well, it's important that parents understand that over 65 million children went to a public school yesterday, and the overwhelming majority of them came home safely. your children are safe in schools. this was not a school shooting. this was a shooting that occurred at a school. this was a deranged individual who chose to kill people in a school, children and teachers. >> you make a good point. i have to say, steve, i've had a psychologist, a criminologist on the set here with me named james fox who authored a book which talks about violence in schools from preschool through college. the fact is there is enough information to put together a book on this. what do you think it is about schools that appeals to the minds of disturbed people like this?
